FAQs

So what exactly is Positive Psychology coaching?

There are many different definitions of Positive Psychology, but the one I like best is:

“Positive Psychology is the scientific study of human flourishing, and an applied approach to optimal functioning. It has also been defined as the study of strengths and virtues that enable individuals, communities and organisations to thrive.” (Gable & Haidt, 2005, Sheldon & King, 2001)

A good definition of coaching is:

“The art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another.” (Downey, 2003)

So Positive Psychology Coaching is best explained as a mix of science and art. It’s a way of encouraging people to identify and use their individual strengths to best advantage, to find meaning and long-lasting contentment in their life, to be resilient in the face of challenge, and to grow their bank of personal resources to find success – whatever that means to them.

Can you coach me to be happy all the time?

The short answer is no! And even if I could, I’d be doing you a massive disservice.

It’s not a realistic – or desirable – goal to wear rose-tinted glasses in every situation, or to be permanently up-beat no matter what life throws at you. To strive towards this would, in my opinion, be counterproductive as it would rule out much of the complexity and richness of life. As awful as they can be to experience, tragedy, trauma, break-ups, illness and grief are all an unavoidable part of the human experience.

In fact, there was an experiment in the 70s, when a psychologist asked if people would prefer a real and authentic life, with all its ups and downs, trials and tribulations, or to be wired up to a machine which would simulate a ‘perfect’ life. All the participants chose a real life. Which would you prefer?

I practise Second Wave Positive Psychology, which has a nuanced approach to the concepts of positive and negative. This cognitively equips us to face life’s challenges head on, to develop grit and resilience, and to be in the best possible place to bounce back and grow following difficult experiences. It is also a fantastic way to become aware of, appreciate and truly savour the many positive events, big and small, that can be found in our everyday lives.

How many sessions will I need?

Teenagers typically have six sessions with me, each lasting an hour at my office outside Henley-on-Thames. After this initial course, they are always welcome for ‘top-up’ sessions as and when needed (perhaps to prepare for an exam) and I offer these at a discounted rate.

For adults, it depends entirely on the personal and professional goals. I offer a three, six and 12 hour packages (plus a free, 30 minute chemistry call) to be taken over the course of 12 months either at my office outside Henley-on-Thames or via Skype. On-site coaching is also available on request.

For corporate clients, packages are bespoke to fit requirements depending on the size of your company, the number of employees who require coaching and whether you want on-going support or intensive support during a time of change, for example. Typically, I am contracted to be on-site for one to two full days a month. Please get in contact for more details.

“M looked forward to her weekly sessions and was really disappointed when the course finished. She said that she wished it could have continued and that is quite a compliment considering how precious a teenager’s time is.”

M.C.

“Adele gave me methods on how to look on negative situations in a positive way. My mood board is up in my room and makes me feel happy and feel more motivated whenever I look at it.”
